Elk Creek Campground & RV Park, Grand Lake, Colorado

During our time in Grand Lake and the Rocky Mountains we stayed at the Elk Creek Campground & RV Park located within the boundaries of the Rocky Mountain National Park and just 1/4 a mile outside of Grand Lake, Colorado.

The campground has about 14 small cabins, 50 RV sites, and plenty of tent camping.  Amenities include large, clean restrooms and showers, a laundry facility, an arcade, tv/rec room with wifi, and a small trout pond for kids.  The campground was clean but noisy due to the close proximity of the campsites and the number of children running around on the roads.

We chose this campground because of its closeness to the west entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park and because reviews boast of moose and elk visiting the campground.  When we checked-in we were asked to sign a waiver due to wildlife being recently spotted in the area.  A bull moose and young black bear had been visiting the campground just days before we arrived.  When we asked where the bull moose had been seen, the owners told us that it was last seen in our site.  This made us a little nervous and excited all at the same time.  Unfortunately, the only moose or elk we saw during our trip were well within the Rocky Mountain National park borders and we didn't see one bear.  Gman's new bear bells must have scared them off!

Camp K

Site # 32

For the next three days of our trip our camp base would be RV site #32. Willows bordered one side of the campsite and a small pine tree stood alone on the other.  The back of the site had a rocky border that dropped off about a foot into a lush green lawn of grass.  The picnic table was within feet of our trailer, however, the fire ring was off some distance, behind our site, on the lawn.  The site was fairly narrow and short with an awkward entrance that made it difficult to get our trailer into place.  We also had to raise one side of our trailer nearly a half foot to get it level.  This made some awkward moments trying to get in and out of the trailer even with our step down.

Although we enjoyed our stay at Elk Creek we both decided that if we were to return to Grand Lake we would try another campground north of Elk Creek called Winding River Resort.
